Internal and external Sources of Recruitment in HRM

Let us see the types advantages & disadvantages of internal and external sources of Recruitment in HRM. The sources of recruitment are of two types namely Internal and External sources. Internal source is that type of recruitment in which the employer consider the  existing employees for the given post. In internal recruitment the employer will not bring new employees rather he recruit the existing employees itself.

Sources of Recruitment:

Recruitment is a process of attracting deserving candidates to apply for the said post. There are two sources from which the management can get deserving candidates. They are Internal and External sources. Let us see the internal and external sources of recruitment in HRM in detail:

Internal Source:

Internal sources are such sources where in the existing employees of the organisation itself will be appointed for the new position. This may happen due to various reason like, HRP reveals excess of employees than required, more eligible candidates, candidate is interested for a shift etc. Most of the organisations use this source of recruitment for recruitment in higher positions.

External Sources:

External sources are such sources where in the organisation will recruit from the external i.e out of the organisation. The management will get vast choice when opting for this source. This may happen when the organisation feels that deserving candidate is not available in the organisation, need new blood in the organisation etc.

Advantages of Internal Sources for Recruitment:

  • Motivation
  • Speed of Hiring
  • Less Expensive
  • Less time to socialize
  • Need to hire only at entry level

Disadvantages of Internal Sources for Recruitment:

  • May give rise to Internal Politics
  • Morale problem of those who have not been promoted

Types of External Sources for Recruitment:

Following are the various methods by which the employer recruit the employees from external sources for the given post

  • Management Consultant
  • Employment Exchange
  • Campus
  • Advertisement
  • Walk In

Advantages of External Sources for Recruitment:

  • New people new perspective
  • Facilitate Organizational Change
  • Not aligned with group within the firm .

Disadvantages of External Sources for Recruitment:

  • May cause moral problem inside
  • Not familiar with the culture
  • Time consumption
  • Expensive.

AS discussed above both the internal and external sources have its own advantages and disadvantages. Hence while planning for the recruitment the management should decide strategically on which source need to be considered for recruitment whether internal or external sources. While decided the post for which the recruitment is done need to be kept in mind.
